CARCINOMA A LANGUAGE CELLS OF THE LANGUAGE IN YOUNG WOMEN
The incidence of tumors affecting the tongue is increasing in young (between 18 and 44 years) of the white race, especially women. To assess the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and tongue, US researchers from the University of North Carolina and Brown University analyzed the incidence and survival data extracted from the National Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program Cancer Institute, in the period 1975 - 2007, for both types of cancer. Three cohorts were examined: each age, from 18 to 44 ('young') and over-44. Participants were stratified by gender and / or race and the percentage change and annual percentage change were calculated using 'jointpoint' regression analysis to evaluate trend differences. Overall, the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity decreased in the first cohort, but increased for young white women (percentage variation 34.8, annual percentage variation 2.2; p <0.05). The incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue was also decreased in the group of each age, but not in that of 18 - 44 years (percentage variation 28.8, annual percentage variation 1.8, p <0.05). The cohort of young white women has shown a tendency to increase the incidence of tongue cancer (young white women: percentage change 111.3, annual percentage variation 4; p <0.05; young white men: percentage variation 43.7, annual percentage variation 1.6; p <0.05). The annual percentage variation of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue was therefore significantly greater in young white women than in white young males (p = 0.007). In the study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (see original abstract) a reduction in the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma was observed in all other oral sub-sites, but people of different races would not show a reduction in incidence of the tumors studied. Cancer-specific survival was instead comparable between white people aged 18 to 44 and over-44s. The authors believe that young white women can represent a new emerging population of head and neck cancer patients.
